Second person
When writing in your webstack, it might be helpful to write in second person perspective.
Using second person ("You should..."):
- Creates psychological distance that can be helpul for objectivity
- Can feel more authorative and directive
- May make it easier to follow your own instructions later
Many people find that second person works particularly well for self-guides because:
- It mimics the instructional tone you're accustomed to following
- The psychological distance can help bypass resistance to difficult tasks
- When revisiting your guides later, the direct address feels like getting advice from a mentor
You might also consider mixing approaches—using second person for procedural steps and first person for commitments or reflections. Ultimately, choose the perspective that motivates you most effectively.
